Lower Jaw Surgery (Mandibular Sagittal Split Osteotomy)
A Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy (BSSO) is performed to correct mal-alignment of jaws and teeth. Correcting such irregularities can greatly improve functionality of the bite, speaking, breathing, reduce wear and tear on teeth, and can improve facial aesthetics. The BSSO has evolved into an effective and preferred surgical procedure for mandibular advancement or setbacks.
A BSSO is performed on the lower jaw, the mandible, in order to move it forward in the case of a deficient lower jaw, or backward in the case of a large lower jaw. How is Mandible Angle Resection performed?
An incision is made inside the mouth from the 2nd molar to the canines. The desired shape is trimmed from the back of the jaw to the mental foramen. By removing just the outer layer of the jaw, the width of the face is made slimmer (cortex removal). The amount of trimming depends on the severity of the width.
